How Long Is Your Receipt?
Part of running a businness is deciding when and where to spend your hard earned cash. It's interesting to look at those decisions as a consumer and wonder what goes into them - is there a lesson that I can apply somewhere? For example, if you buy...

Negotiating - It's Not All About Winning
More and more I see business people adopt the mindset that any negotiation is raw combat with the goal of not just winning, but winning by as much margin as possible. I'm not opposed to winning, it's a basic human drive to want to win and of course...

Employee or 1099?
My friend Wes Dumey does a lot of work in the business intelligence sector as a contract employee and has a post worth reading called The Great Debate - Employee vs. Consulting . I don't agree with all of his points, but it's an interesting conversation...

Transparent, Translucent, or Opaque? Whats Your Strategy?
It's a couple weeks old, but there was a mild blog roar over some comments from Microsoft about wanting to be translucent rather than transparent. I think their reasoning is sound; no company should want or need to disclose the smallest detail about...

Heroes? Probably Not
One of the big themes this year for Microsoft (and I just saw it on the PASS Summit site) is about IT Heroes. Perhaps I'm just hard to live with today, but I don't think there are too many heroes in IT. We work hard, we make a big contribution...

Are All Meetings Bad?
I was mildly amused by my friend Steve Jones blog post Finding a Direction about not really wanting to spend a couple days in meetings. The amusement is in part because I know he's just as contrarian as I am, but really it's because we have an...

The Fun of Blogs
If you look at my blog roll Jeff Dunntemann is one of the ones recommend. Nothing about SQL Server there, but he is a technology guy and a thinking one at that. I catch up on reading his stuff from time to time and just yesterday read The Friction is...

Chipotle - A Model Business? Or Just Good Food?
Had a friend forward this link to me about Chipotle and it's worth reading if you either A, like Chipotle/Mexican food, or B, like to learn from businesses that are well run and growing. I eat there a couple times a month probably for the same reasons...

IT Transparency Posted on SSC
As I mentioned yesterday the article I wrote on IT Transparency is finally live today and now the wait to see what the response is! I hope you'll drop me a comment after you read it, either here on the blog or in the SSC forum attached to the article...

IT Transparency, the intro!
Tomorrow SSC is scheduled to publish an article I wrote on IT Transparency which gives a first person account of one strategy I used to try to make it a little easier for the business to see where IT time/money was going. Debated over whether to publish...
